Human cloning should be banned because it is dehumanizing the process of human creation.
Elizabeth Foley in "The United States Should Not Ban Human Cloning." Published in 2012, states that banning human cloning would violate the First Amendment because it protects the ideas of citizens and if citizens are not allowed to act on their thoughts then they can’t breed the traits of boldness and courage which is important in self-governance. Foley had gotten the idea of self-governance by Alexander Meiklejohn stating that the First Amendment is protecting the right of citizens to further their ideas of education, literature, arts, philosophy, science, and the public discussion of public issues without fearing consequences. The banning of human cloning is banning the actions of cloning, but not the thoughts. Foley believes that the scientific actions of human cloning is based on a hypothesis that many other methods that we accept today originated from. Foley also takes the government actions and citizen thoughts against each other by saying that it would violate the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment because it would deprive an individual’s life from liberty and property without due process of law, the government is not allowed to ban human cloning unless it would result the harm of the economy or the people.
In contrast, Foley states that banning human cloning is against multiple Amendments. Human cloning involves citizens so it is the citizen’s choice if human cloning should be banned, many believe that it should be banned. Since citizens can vote for the president and many other freedoms then they should have the right to vote for the banning of human cloning. If the vote is in favor of the ban then the Congress does have the right to ban it because it came from citizens and not the Congress alone, which does not violate the First Amendment. The Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment states that every citizen has the freedom to live their lives the way they please and the government states that it will be dehumanizing the lives of citizens if we were to control them, yet it states that the process of cloning also dehumanizes the process of birth and the organisms that it requires.
Gregory Stock and Francis Fukuyama states that no law can stop technology from progressing, there will always be technology around making humans more curious about what they can do and achieve with the advancement of technology. Banning human cloning and the technology for it could cause problems in the future because the technology can be used for other science theories and illnesses. Stock and Fukuyama states that there isn’t danger in human cloning and believe that cloning is a choice of the patient that is going to undergo the procedure and in that way there would be no harm to anybody because it only involves the patient that wants to be involve with human cloning. The technology is advanced to where the patient can pick which gender to clone and possibly what skills and performances they can also obtain growing up.
Although the advancement of technology is always a great thing in the world because it allows scientist to do research on multiple issues, if the technology was to harm the patient that is undergoing the procedure then it is causing harm. Not all technologies can be sanitized to where it does not cause infections, the patient’s body might also fight the process causing the patient to become sick. This affects more than just the patient, it affects the family and friends that the patient has, more than one patient is going to undergo this procedure and it is not proven to be 100% safe yet. For example in figure 6 we see that Dolly the sheep was the first cloned mammal. However that came with a lot of adverse health issues. She eventually died of cancer, she aged prematurely, developed arthritis and contracted a virus that eventually killed all the sheep around her. It is naturally unfair that a patient might have more advantages with human cloning because they can choose the gender and what skills and performance that they can have while growing up while many other families naturally have a baby without knowledge of the gender or the skills and performance. This is unethical because of what the human cloning patients can achieve that only natural human birth patients hope and dream for.
Gregory E Pence claims that human cloning is just the clone of an ancestor, not the clone of what the ancestor has learned or experienced. The love that people would have for cloned babies would be enormous, Pence refers to “test-tubes” babies and how people believe that they would have not been loved, but now they are the most wanted and the most loved babies in human history. Cloning humans would fail at having a superior race because a person would be cloned and have a baby with non-cloned person resulting in normalization. Cloning is not just another person from science, it is a real person that has the same amount of chromosomes as everyone else. The process of cloning would be the same as natural birth except for the first stages, but the cloned baby would be in a mother womb and not an artificial womb, science has tried for over fifty years to make an artificial womb and it has not been successfully done. Human cloning is not for selfish people, it is for families that cannot have children or people that wish to have children through science because the love of it and to prove that science is evolving. Pence believes that human cloning has the result of a human being, not just a science figure.
Although cloning would be a human being and nota science figure, many people today are still anti-technology when it comes to the technology interfering with how a person should live their life. Many studies show that technology can be very dangerous sometimes. People are still trying to adapt to technology, and our ancestors should stay in the past because everyone has differences even twins so there should not be someone who looks alike someone whether they have the memories of someone else. Mankind is unique and everyone is one of a kind, technology should not ruin that and make certain people look the same because of human cloning. Everyone deserves to have their own uniqueness and should not be compared to anybody because there isn’t anybody on Earth that is like them.
