Cloning Technology and Uses In 5000 B.C, humans believed that they can improve corn crops by using the seeds from the best plants, this is where the idea of cloning started from. A scientist named Gregor Mendel established the basic laws of inheritance by publishing “Experiments in Plant Hybridization”, this action named Mendel the father of genetics. The years following after that were dealt with scientist experimenting with small animals, DNA, and the findings of the nuclei cells and the information is held in the cells.
Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) is the most common process for cloning. SCNT is the movement of a nucleus and transferred into another cell. This process is also used for embryonic stem cell research. This process has been around since 1962, when it was first accomplished by John Gurdon from cloning frogs. The first successful mammal cloning was in 1996, this cloning was dealt with a domestic sheep named Dolly. Her cloning process was not announced until 1997 causing controversial arguments around the world, one side believing that cloning should be more researched and the start of something new, other saying that it should be banned because it is against human nature. She was the first mammal cloned from an adult somatic cell using the transfer of the nucleus cell. She lived from July 5, 1996 to February 14, 2003 and gave birth to four lambs during her life. She was put down because she started showing signs for arthritis in her hind legs.
